"The Workshop is intended for writers who have just begun to sell or who need that final bit of insight or skill to become a published writer. Preferred length is the short story (10,000 words or less), though writers frequently turn in short-shorts (shorter than 3,000 words) and longer works. If you are writing a novel, you might want to consider the novel-writing workshop held in conjunction with this short-form workshop. Everyone comments on every story, each story will be analyzed for publishability, and writers will be encouraged to submit their work for publication.

"James Gunn will lead the Workshop. The Writers Workshop will have Fred Pohl and Elizabeth Ann Hull as guest reviewers during its last day, and we hope to have other attending authors participate at least one day, as well. Kij Johnson and Chris McKitterick will be present during the full two weeks for personal consultation and other activities, and Kij Johnson will teach a novel-writing workshop in conjunction with the regular Writers Workshop. Feel free to take the novel-writing workshop at the same time as the main Writers Workshop, but expect to do a lot more work! Notable SF author-guests of the Conference usually stay in the dorm with the attendees, so you will have special access to these luminaries.

"Starting in 2005, the winner of the James E. Gunn Award for Science Fiction Writing is also invited to attend the Workshop with a partial scholarship in addition to prize money."

Instructors work closely with students, critiquing stories, leading class discussions on technique and other professional concerns, and holding individual or small group conferences. Drawing on Seattle's vibrant SF community, the workshop also presents informal sessions with acclaimed area authors.

"Since its inception in 1996, Odyssey has quickly become one of the most highly respected workshops for writers of fantasy, science fiction, and horror. Top authors, editors and agents have served as guests at Odyssey, and 52% of graduates have gone on to be published. The workshop, held annually on the campus of Saint Anselm College in Manchester, New Hampshire, runs for six weeks, and combines an intensive learning and writing experience with in-depth feedback on students' manuscripts. Odyssey is for developing writers whose work is approaching publication quality and for published writers who want to improve their work. Those who attend must be ready to put aside all their other concerns and make a single-minded effort to improve their writing. This is a serious, demanding program. I'm constantly told by graduates that they learned more at Odyssey than they learned in years of workshopping and creative writing classes. You should not apply unless you are ready to hear about the weaknesses in your writing and ready to work to overcome them. Class meets for 4 hours in the morning, 5 days a week, and students use afternoons, evenings, and weekends to write, read each other's work, and complete other class assignments. College credit is available upon request."
